Alongside his filmmaking, Josh Safdie has sustained a practice as a visual artist rooted in New York's downtown art scene. Following college, he worked as a studio assistant to the sculptor Tom Sachs, whose hands-on approach to making things has echoes in the scrappy, handmade quality of Safdie's own work. Through the creative collective Red Bucket Films, which he co-founded, Safdie has long made drawings and sculptures alongside his films. In 2012 he co-founded Museum (later renamed Mmuseumm) with Alex Kalman, a free, nonprofit space opened in a defunct freight-elevator shaft on Cortlandt Alley, behind the Red Bucket offices at 368 Broadway. Located on a small street on the edge of Chinatown, the museum exhibits everyday contemporary artifacts as a way of illustrating the complexities of the modern world, with past displays including toothpaste tubes from around the globe and papers left behind in copy machines. More recently, Safdie produced the above edition with Two Palms, which was exhibited most recently at The Armory Show in New York and has been acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art for their permanent collection.
